What does Allah (God) say about the Prophet ââEesa (Eesho/âJesus)(P) and his mothÂer Maryam (Miriam/âMary) in His last RevÂeÂlaÂtion to mankind, the Qurâan ?
The folÂlowÂing are selectÂed QurâanÂic versÂes dealÂing with ââEesa and Mary, may Godâs blessÂings be upon them :
- âO PeoÂple of the Book ! ComÂmit no excessÂes in your reliÂgion : nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) A MesÂsenÂger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a SpirÂit proÂceedÂing from Him : so believe in Allah and His MesÂsenÂgers. Say not ââTrinÂiÂtyâ: desist : it will be betÂter for you : for Allah is One Allah : gloÂry be to Him : (far ExaltÂed is He) above havÂing a son. To Him belong all things in the heavÂens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a DisÂposÂer of affairs.â [4:171]
- âAnd (rememÂber) her who guardÂed her chastiÂty : We breathed into her of Our SpirÂit, and We made her and her son a Sign for all peoÂples.â [21:91]
- âWe gave Moses the Book and folÂlowed him up with a sucÂcesÂsion of MesÂsenÂgers ; We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, Clear (Signs) and strengthÂened him with the Holy SpirÂit. Is it that whenÂevÂer there comes to you a MesÂsenÂger with what ye yourÂselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride ? Some ye called imposters, and othÂers ye slay!â [2:87]
- âThose MesÂsenÂgers We endowed with gifts, some above othÂers : to one of them Allah spoke ; othÂers He raised to degrees (of honÂour); to Jesus, the son of Mary, We gave Clear (Signs), and strengthÂened him with the holy spirÂit. If Allah had so willed, sucÂceedÂing genÂerÂaÂtions would not have fought among each othÂer, after Clear (Signs) had come to them but they (chose) to wranÂgle, some believÂing and othÂers rejectÂing. If Allah had so willed, they would not have fought each othÂer ; but Allah fulÂfilÂleth His plan.â [2:253]
- âThen will Allah say : ââO Jesus the son of Mary ! recount My favour to thee and to thy mothÂer. Behold ! I strengthÂened thee with the holy spirÂit, so that thou didst speak to the peoÂple in childÂhood and in matuÂriÂty. Behold ! I taught thee the Book and WisÂdom, the Law and the Gospel. And behold ! thou makÂest out of clay, as it were, the figÂure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathest into it, and it becometh a bird by My leave, and thou healest those born blind, and the lepÂers, by My leave. And behold ! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold ! I did restrain the ChilÂdren of Israel from (vioÂlence to) thee when thou didst show them the Clear Signs, and the unbeÂlievÂers among them said : This is nothÂing but eviÂdent magÂic.â â [5:110]
- âAnd Allah will teach him the Book and WisÂdom, the Law and the Gospel, And (appoint him) a mesÂsenÂger to the ChilÂdren of Israel, (with this mesÂsage): ââI have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figÂure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allahâs leave : and I heal those born blind, and the lepÂers, and I quickÂen the dead, by Allahâs leave ; and I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your housÂes. SureÂly thereÂin is a Sign for you if ye did believe ; (I have come to you), to attest the Law which was before me. And to make lawÂful to you part of what was (before) forÂbidÂden to you ; I have come to you with a Sign from your Lord. So fear Allah, and obey me.â â [3:48âââ50]
- âAnd in their footÂsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, conÂfirmÂing the Law that had come before him : We sent him the Gospel : thereÂin was guidÂance and light, and conÂfirÂmaÂtion of the Law that had come before him : a guidÂance and an admoÂniÂtion to those who fear Allah.â [5:46]
- âCursÂes were proÂnounced on those among the ChilÂdren of Israel who rejectÂed Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary, because they disÂobeyed and perÂsistÂed in ExcessÂes.â [5:78]
- âFor Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord : so worÂship ye Him : this is a Straight Way.â [43:64]
- âAnd rememÂber, Jesus, the son of Mary, said : ââO ChilÂdren of Israel ! I am the MesÂsenÂger of Allah (sent) to you, conÂfirmÂing the Law (which came) before me, and givÂing Glad TidÂings of a MesÂsenÂger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.â But when he came to them with Clear Signs they said, ââThis is eviÂdent sorÂcery!â â [61:6]
- âO ye who believe ! Be ye helpers of Allah : as said Jesus, the son of Mary, to the DisÂciÂples, ââWho will be my helpers to (the work of) Allah?â Said the DisÂciÂples, ââWe are Allahâs helpers!â Then a porÂtion of the ChilÂdren of Israel believed, and a porÂtion disÂbeÂlieved : but We gave powÂer to those who believed against their eneÂmies, and they became the ones that preÂvailed.â [61:14]
- âThat they said (in boast), ââWe killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the MesÂsenÂger of Allahâ; but they killed him not, nor cruÂciÂfied him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who difÂfer thereÂin are full of doubts, with no (cerÂtain) knowlÂedge, but only conÂjecÂture to folÂlow, for of a sureÂty they killed him not.â [4:157]
- âBehold ! Allah said : ââO Jesus ! I will take thee and raise thee to myself and clear thee (of the falseÂhood) of those who blasÂpheme ; I will make those who folÂlow thee supeÂriÂor to those who reject Faith, to the Day of ResÂurÂrecÂtion : then shall ye all return unto Me, and I will judge between you of the matÂters whereÂin ye disÂpute.â [3:55]
- âNay, Allah raised him up unto HimÂself ; and Allah is ExaltÂed in PowÂer, Wise. And there is none of the PeoÂple of the Book but must believe in him before his death ; and on the Day of JudgÂment he will be a witÂness against them.â [4:158âââ159]
- âIn blasÂpheÂmy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say : ââWho then hath the least powÂer against Allah, if His Will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mothÂer, and all, everyÂone that is on the earth ? For to Allah belongeth the dominÂion of the heavÂens and the earth, and all that is between. He creÂateth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath powÂer over all things.â â [5:17]
- âThey do blasÂpheme who say : ââAllah is Christ the son of Mary.â But said Christ : ââO ChilÂdren of Israel ! WorÂship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.â WhoÂevÂer joins othÂer gods with Allah, Allah will forÂbid him the GarÂden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrongÂdoÂers be no one to help.â [5:72]
- âSay : ââO PeoÂple of the Book ! exceed not in your reliÂgion the bounds (of what is propÂer), tresÂpassÂing beyond the truth, nor folÂlow the vain desires of peoÂple who went wrong in times gone by, who misÂled many, and strayed (themÂselves) from the even Way.â â [5:77]
- âAnd behold ! Allah will say : ââO Jesus the son of Mary ! didst thou say unto men, ââWorÂship me and my mothÂer as gods in deroÂgaÂtion of Allahâ?â He will say : ââGloÂry to Thee ! nevÂer could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, Thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowÂest what is in my heart, though I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowÂest in full all that is hidÂden. ââNevÂer said I to them aught except what Thou didst comÂmand me to say, to wit, ââWorÂship Allah, my Lord and your Lordâ; and I was a witÂness over them whilst I dwelt amongst them ; when thou didst take me up thou wast the WatchÂer over them, and Thou art a witÂness to all things.â [5:116âââ117]
- âChrist, the son of Mary, was no more than a MesÂsenÂger ; many were the MesÂsenÂgers that passed away before him. His mothÂer was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daiÂly) food. See how Allah doth make His Signs clear to them ; yet see in what ways they are deludÂed away from the truth!â [5:75]
- âHe was no more than a serÂvant : We grantÂed Our favour to him, and We made him an examÂple to the ChilÂdren of Israel.â [43:59]
- âThen, in their wake, We folÂlowed them up with (othÂers of) Our MesÂsenÂgers : We sent after them Jesus the son of Mary, and bestowed on him the Gospel ; and We ordained in the hearts of those who folÂlowed him ComÂpasÂsion and MerÂcy, but the MonasÂtiÂcism which they inventÂed for themÂselves, We did not preÂscribe for them : (We comÂmandÂed) only the seekÂing for the Good PleaÂsure of Allah ; but that they did not fosÂter as they should have done. Yet We bestowed, on those among them who believed, their (due) reward, but many of them are rebelÂlious transÂgresÂsors.â [57:27]
- âThat they rejectÂed Faith ; that they uttered against Mary a grave false charge;â [4:156]
- âAnd Mary, the daughÂter of ââImran, who guardÂed her chastiÂty ; and We breathed into (her body) of Our spirÂit ; and she tesÂtiÂfied to the truth of the words of her Lord and of his RevÂeÂlaÂtions, and was one of the devout (SerÂvants).â [66:12]
- âSay ye : ââWe believe in Allah, and the revÂeÂlaÂtion givÂen to us, and to AbraÂham, Ismaâil, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that givÂen to Moses and Jesus, and that givÂen to (all) Prophets from their Lord : we make no difÂferÂence between one and anothÂer of them : and we bow to Allah (in Islam).ââ [2:136]
- âBehold ! the angels said : ââO Mary ! Allah giveth Thee glad tidÂings of a Word from Him : his name will be Christ Jesus. The son of Mary, held in honÂour in this world and the HereÂafter and of (the comÂpaÂny of) those nearÂest to Allah;â [3:45]
- âWe have sent thee inspiÂraÂtion, as We sent it to Noah and the MesÂsenÂgers after him : We sent inspiÂraÂtion to AbraÂham, Ismaâil, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, JonÂah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.â [4:163]
- âHe said : ââI am indeed a serÂvant of Allah : He hath givÂen me revÂeÂlaÂtion and made me a prophet ; ââAnd He hath made me blessed whereÂsoÂevÂer I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and CharÂiÂty as long as I live : â(He) hath made me kind to my mothÂer, and not overÂbearÂing or misÂerÂable ; ââSo Peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)!â Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary : (it is) a stateÂment of Truth, about which they (vainÂly) disÂpute.â [19:30âââ34]
God Almighty revealed to MuhamÂmad, in the Qurâan, the truth about Al-Maseeh (MesÂsiÂah) ââEesa Ibnu Maryam (Jesus, the Son of Mary)(P). The Qurâan acknowlÂedges the MesÂsiÂahship of ââEesa(P) and Godâs mirÂaÂcle of his virÂgin birth as a sign to the Israelites in order to bring back those Jews who deviÂatÂed from the right path of God, the ââlost sheep of Israelâ as statÂed by Jesus(P).
